The Class of 2017’s graduating senior students from Helen Thackston Charter School is a wonderful example of how a small group of people can positively change the world. For a greater percentage of the graduating senior students and families in the Class of 2017, this senior graduation ceremony was a first-time experience for publicly celebrating student’s educational successes. It seems that the Class of 2016 students got the education empowerment movement started, with 82 percent of students surveyed currently actively employed or enrolled in colleges. They are examples of true dedication and perseverance to educational empowerment in the community.

The Class of 2017 shattered the ceiling of high expectations and college and career successes. Ninety-one percent of students surveyed in the Class of 2017 are furthering their educations. Team effort by students, parents, community members, and teachers, toward academic and extra-curricular student successes has truly led to high rates of college and career opportunities for each Class of 2017 graduate. However, success does not happen overnight. It is also important to honor the process it took each of our Class of 2017 graduates to reach success.

This Class of 2017 models what it looks like for others to be positive character individuals within the community. Whether singing, dancing, learning, playing basketball, volunteering, reading or communicating college and career goals, the Class of 2017 does so with dignity. They shake hands. They look a person in the eye when speaking. They listen to each other. They show a positive attitude.

Class of 2017 graduates, please know that your positive influence has had profound effect on the lives of young people in the community. Thank you.
